The Merrion Lounge / Havelet sold for scrap
April 23, 2013, 10:35:19 PM
The Havelet which at one stage operated under charter to Brittany Ferries on the Cork - Roscoff route has arrived in Aliaga for scrapping.

Tribute and details

http://hhvferry.com/blog/?p=4607

Reason why the Havelet should be remembered in Ireland, March 1992, it was hit by a freak wave and developed a serious list and caused damage to vehicles on deck.

It was only a few years ago when the Lisco Gloria caught fire enroute to Klaipeda.

Anyone with some knowledge of this might like to contact Ferry  Publications at the contact details provided:

Does anyone remember?
26 February 2013
Does anyone remember Welsh Irish Ferries Ltd? If so we would like to hear from you or if you have any photographs. Please contact nicola@lilypublications.co.uk.

The company only ran for a matter of weeks or months around 1984-85. The logo was a flag with a dragon and a shamrock - you can just about make it out behind the truck.
The brochure text reads as follows:
A Long Way to Tipperary? Not any more. We offer an overnight Ro-Ro service three times a week each way leaving Barry on the evening of Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday and Cork on the evenings of Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The sailing time is approximately 12 hours. The use of Barry not only means easy access to and from the M4 Motorway but also a distance saving of 87 miles to Pembroke and 100 miles to Fishguard and a time saving of 2 1/2 to 4 hours on the journey – and, as every operator knows, time is money.
Our prices are competitive. All haulage equipment is available from the Company and competitive prices can be given for door to door delivery between the U.K. and Ireland. In addition the Company operates a landbridge service between Cork-Barry and Dover-Ostend and other South Coast and Continental Ports. We provide comfortable double cabins, good food and unbelievable duty-free prices – all in all the easy way to Ireland.

Viking Line will have the all new Viking Grace entering service next week. One major invovation is that the vessel in fuelled with LNG, it is one of the first vessels of this type in service and it will be interesting to see how it performs. Given the easy access to LNG in Milford Haven, i would think that Irish Ferries will be very interested in this ships performance.

Here are some images and information on the ship.

Press Release dated Jan 10th 2013

Viking Line Abp today took delivery of the Viking Grace from the STX Finland Oy shipyard.
The vessel was ordered on  December 22, 2010 and built in
Turku, Finland. It begins service on  Tuesday, January 15. The price of the vessel is approximately EUR 240 million.

A vessel that represents a totally new generation
Viking Grace represents a totally new generation where modern design, future concepts, high standard of services and an overall environmental consciousness characterize the whole project. The passengers will be offered innovative experiences regarding the product and
service concepts.

The vessel is an environmental pioneer in the cruise industry. Viking Line has systematically planned the construction of the Viking Grace in a ways that will enable the use of cuttingedge technology to achieve a cleaner environment, in accordance with sustainable development principles. The Company has endeavoured to find optimal environmental solutions in all areas.

The M/S Viking Grace will be the world's first large passenger vessel to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). The cleanest fossil fuel available today, LNG provides major environmental advantages. By using natural gas the hazardous emissions will decrease to a minimum. Nitrogen emissions and particulates are reduced by 85 per cent and greenhouse gases by 15 per cent. Sulphur emissions are practically zero.

The vessel has a hydrodynamically optimized hull shape and highly  effective propulsion machinery that saves energy. Extensive development work has been devoted to the hull shape, which minimizes swell waves. In day-to-day operations on board the vessel, recycling and resource optimization will be guiding principles.

The Louis Drefus operated Ciudad de Cadiz has been aground near Mostyn for the last few days, it seems the vessel got caught out on the tide and is beached on the sand.

It is used for carrying wings for Airbus from the UK to France.

It is not the Airbus branded vessel that called at Rosslare in the LD Lines era (2007) as that was the Ville de Bourdeaux branded Airbus A380 on board.
