Ports de Normandie a lancé début décembre un appel à manifestation d'intérêt pour la création d'un terminal de ferroutage et la recherche d'opérateurs ferroviaires sur le port transmanche de Cherbourg.

Brittany Ferries, avec le soutien de Ports de Normandie, souhaite mettre en place une « autoroute ferroviaire » entre Bayonne au Pays Basque, l'Angleterre et l'Irlande via le port de Cherbourg.

Vendredi 24 janvier lors de la cérémonie des vœux institutionnels de la compagnie maritime, son président Jean-Marc Roué a expliqué vouloir lancer un aller-retour par jour pour cent camions.

Ces centaines de tonnes de CO2 seraient ainsi économisées à chaque voyage.

La compagnie entend surtout répondre aux enjeux du Brexit. Elle a déjà constaté depuis un an une hausse de 30 % des trafics poids lourds entre l'Espagne et le Royaume-Uni.

Une aide de 2 millions d'euros

Mais Jean-Marc Roué et Hervé Morin ont un peu tué le suspense. En présentant le bilan de Ports de Normandie, son président a indiqué que l'Union européenne avait décidé d'attribuer une aide de 2 millions d'euros pour ce terminal. Le principe serait en fait d'utiliser des wagons avec une plateforme pivotante, pour laisser monter camion et remorque.

Restera à raccorder le terminal à la ligne ferroviaire qui traverse la ville pour desservir le port. Elle avait été mise en site propre en 2007, une fiabilisation de la desserte qui, indiquait à l'époque Réseau ferré de France, doit permettre une vitesse de circulation de 30 km/h.

D'autres aménagements ont été réalisés en 2014 et 2015, avec le remplacement du passage à niveau franchissant le boulevard Maritime et une réorganisation du réseau ferré sur l'emprise portuaire, pour répondre aux besoins de la filière des énergies marines renouvelables.
