The routes between Ireland and France have been registered as part of the international rail line network, which opens the door to greater integration of irish rail system into the continental booking system.

It's one of the results of the big increase in direct sailings to the continent since Brexit.

For the sail rail , Stena are still to join into the scheme which is strange given that they operate it on the UK routes.   Brittany Ferries and Irish will operate the scheme which will be enhanced over the next 12 months to make bookings seamless.

President Macron and Taoiseach agreed the development of a new ireland-france boat and rail ticket yesterday.    It is a reflection of the huge increase in ferry traffic between the two countries.

Surely its time in Dublin and Cork now to improve the foot passenger experience which is far from ideal.

But very good news for ferry travel and for the Ireland-continent links.

Has there been a strategic and tactical mistake by many players in the industry , including Irish Ferries , in believing that trade would settle back to the landbridge?       Is the whole distribution and supply framework for Ireland not inevitably going to tilt toward direct Ireland -continent ferries ?

Based on the Irish Times report today 23 July, it would seem that Brittany Ferries are anticipating a strong switch from landbridge to direct Ireland-continent services post -Brexit.

This would make sense as it is quite likely that Dover and kent are going to be a physical and bureaucratic chaos zone for trucks come January 2021.

There is no other explanation for Brittany embarking on one of the most significant - and welcome - expansion in their services in their history in Ireland

The managing director of Brittany ferries was interviewed in French daily Le monde last week and said that the first six months of the Ireland Spain service had been disappointing.    He said that the company would not allow money to be lost on the service , but he also made a general remark that if Irish hauliers begin to use the direct route over the the Uk land bridge - then there could be interesting business in Ireland - mainland Europe direct links .

The News Board / Re: End of Rosslare Services

- poor connecting rail and bus services for foot passengers at Rosslare (Dublin is actually a better port to arrive into for tourists

- More importantly though, the Government decided a number of years ago to build an under-used motorway to Waterford instead of one of our closest ports to France .    That decision was the beginning of the end for Rosslare.

The News Board / Re: Cork to Santandar to continue in 2019

The continuation of this Spain route through the winter as well as the continuation of the expanded Roscoff service in 2019 is a big vote of confidence in direct Ireland-continent links.

I still don't understand why one of the weekly trips to Santander involves 2 nights on board; longer than usual crossing for what reason?

But congrats to Port of Cork and to Brittany Ferries

I think enormous credit has to be given to Brittany Ferries too for revitalising the link between western France/Brittany and Ireland.

Brittany Ferries started as a farmer's cooperative , and was laughed at by the Paris authorities when they suggested that there was a viable service to UK and Ireland.

The Cork-Roscoff journey is one of the most pleasant trips in Europe on any mode of transport, and hopefully the new service to Spain will be a success too.

A lot of people are realising that taking the ferry to the continent is a great way to travel - and what's the rush anyway?

c'est vraiment dommage qu'avec les nouveaux horaires 2018, Irish Ferries n'offrira plus une service pour les piƩtons entre la France et l'irlande en hiver!

This means that there will be no foot passenger capacity on irish ferries between Ireland and france in the winter, which is a pity
