Nothing to do with the Irish Ferry scene but an infrequent visitor to Ireland has been in the news over the last few weeks, after many years laid up in Dubai the QE2 is apparently off to pastures new in the form of a hotel ship to be moored in Honk Kong, given the amount of money involved one has to wonder will this ever happen.

Some images of the QE2 on its final visit to Cobh in October 2008.

Was there not a problem with Asbestos on the QE2 (like many of her generation), hence her withdrawal?  Regardless its going to be very expensive to do anything with her.  I hope someone does manage to save her (and she could do worse than being used as a hotel) but if Dubai hasn't got the money its hard to see who has.  Her being in dry dock is a good sign anyway, I wonder how it is all progressing as last I heard they where looking for designs for the finished layout?

There is a feature on the QE2 in the current edition of Ships Monthly, it is tied up in Dubai and has a small crew living on board doing routine maintenance, can't see it sailing to China under its own power.

This issue of Ships Monthly will only be in shops untill Thursday.

This sorry saga will probably drag out for years more. The QE2 will be like the the United States and fade away over the years. The sooner she goes to the scrapyard the better.

Never thought I would see the day, but the QE2 has been re opened as a hotel in Dubai.

Some CGI images used on website, but apparently it opened in mid April.

Never been to Dubai, but have visited the Queen Mary in Long Beach and this seems to be a similar set up, but hopeful they will be able to look after the vessel better in the warmer climate.

It wasn't so long ago it seemed her only fate was scrap.  Good to see she has been turned around.  Hopefully she will continue to pay her way to justify her upkeep!
