Preliminary results for the year ended 2009 show that Stena Line saw a 20 - 25 % reduction in freight volumes across all routes.
The company is also expected to return a pre-tax loss for the year ending 2009 , the company commented that its fuel costs have gone from being 10% of their operating costs to 30%.

The possible fleet combinations are really getting very strange, the might just leave everything as is:

On Wikipedia it mentions that the Stena Germanica and Stena Scandinavica cruise ferries are to move to the Poland route in 2010. I've not seen any announcements about this or can't find any info on here or other sites. Is this just a rumour?

It also mentions that Stena Baltica (ex-Konningen Beatrix) will be moving, to where it doesn't say. It also says that the Stena Europe is likely to be moving back to Scandinavia? What will replace the Europe?

I'd read that Stena Hollandica and Stena Britannica were due to move to Poland route when the new ships arrive at Harwich. They can't fit into Dublin, Stranrear or Fleetwood because they are so long, but would Hollandica fit into Fishguard and Rosslare?

Where are they going to get cruise ferries for the Gothenburg-Kiel route? Or had traffic dived on that route? Their competitors on similar north>south routes in that area (Color Line and DFDS) both have big cruise ferries with small car decks and lots of cabins. Bilbao going there?

Never base anything on what you see on Wiki.

Stena always keep things very quiet, but will issue a press release soon I would imagine. Just remember all we have at the moment are rumours...

The STENA CALEDONIA is due to go off for refit on 22nd February until 11th March. She will refit at Harland and Wolff and during the period in dry dock she will also have her Stena Plus lounge extended to enable waiter service and a proper menu to be offered as on her fleet mates. I gather the Stena Plus is to be extended further forward of where it currently is on the starboard side of the ship midships. I assume this will take up the part of the Barista Lounge behind the bar along the starboard funnel casing.

Harland and Wolff are refitting 5 Stena Line Irish sea vessels this winter - STENA EUROPE (completed), STENA LYNX III (currently), STENA LEADER (currently and due back into service sometime this weekend) when I assume the STENA PIONEER will take her place in the Belfast Dry Dock for 2 weeks until the CALEDONIA's turn.

Work is also well underway on the construction of Stena's new Loch Ryan Port, adjacent to the A77 about 1 mile north of Cairnryan with evidence of the site having being cleared for building.

Stena Line have recieved aproval for its relocation from Stranraer to Loch Ryan , the company also signaled its intention to replace Stena Voyager , Stena Caledonia and Stena Navigator with two new high speed conventional ferries once the new terminal is operational.

It appears the STENA CALEDONIA's refit has been delayed by a week and she should enter dry dock on Monday 1st March not this coming Monday 22nd February as originally planned.
It would seem the delay in completing the STENA LEADER's refit (she was back in service a week late) has had a knock-on effect with the STENA PIONEER which is currently in the dry dock and, thus, meaning the STENA SEAFARER cannot be released from Fleetwood to Stranraer to cover for the STENA CALEDONIA until the PIONEER is back.

The Stena Lynx III suffered damage when it collided with terminal 2 at Holyhead , no word yet how badly the ship has been damaged or if its entry into service on Dun Laoghaire - Holyhead on March 15th will be delayed, so far all that is known is that the majority of the damage to the Lynx is to the hull.
The collision also did extensive damage to the link span at the berth.

Reports on Ferries of Northern Europe and Irish Sea Shipping that Stena Line have sold the Stena Navigator.

Possibly a sale and charter back until they get the newbuilds ready for the Belfast route ?

Stena Caledonia is finally getting her refit which is due to commence tomorrow at Harland and Wolff. She was initially to go to dry dock on 22nd February but problems delayed both the Stena Leader and Stena Pioneer during their refits at Belfast, and, with the Stena Pioneer finally ready to re-commence service between Larne and Fleetwood the Caledonia can take her place in the dry dock. This afternoon, she is at the old Stena terminal in Belfast, presumably to allow Stena Navigator to berth at VT4.

During her refit the Stena Caledonia is expected to have her Stena Plus lounge expanded to allow table/waiter service along the lines of her fleetmates.

The Stena Navigator is due to be joined on the Stranraer service by the Stena Seafarer and the timetable operated will be as follows;

Stena Navigator;
0330 Stranraer - Belfast
0730 Belfast - Stranraer
1200 Stranraer - Belfast
on arrival and discharge at Belfast she will proceed to the old Stena terminal until
2230 Belfast - Stranraer

Stena Seafarer
0500 Belfast - Stranraer
0930 Stranraer - Belfast
on arrival and discharge at Belfast she will vacate the berth for the Stena Navigator's 1500 arrival until
1920 Belfast - Stranraer
2359 Stranraer - Belfast

During layover at the old Belfast terminal, Stena Navigator will be receiving additional maintenance and finishing off of some jobs that were not done prior to her entering service in November, including painting car decks.

Leading ferry company Stena Line is giving its Irish Sea fleet a makeover to the tune of over £9 million.

At a time when travel companies across the globe are implementing cutbacks, Stena Line is spending millions on the refit and refurbishment of ships across its five Irish Sea routes.
The Stena Caledonia, which operates on the Stranraer-Belfast route, is currently in dry dock at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast undergoing a £1 million refit. It's the last of eight ships which have been given makeovers in the past three months.

Stena Line's Irish Sea Area Director, Michael McGrath, believes that the investment reflects the ferry company's ongoing commitment to improving its fleet and services.

"At Stena Line we are continually investing in our product to exceed customer expectations and give them a pleasurable and comfortable travelling experience," he said.

"We've never been a company to rest on its laurels and this investment in our Irish Sea fleet reflects a desire to continually improve in terms of quality and service reliability."

"The credit crunch has resulted in more people considering holidays within the British Isles, which is good news for the ferry industry. Therefore it is vitally important that when new customers travel with us we show them how much ferry travel has developed over the years and how pleasurable an experience it can be compared to flying," the Area Director added.

Highlights of Stena Line's makeover programme include a £2M refit and refurbishment of the Stena Nordica superferry, which sails between Holyhead and Dublin Port, £2.1M on the Stena Europe superferry, which operates between Fishguard and Rosslare, and £2M on the Stena Lynx III fastcraft, which sails between Holyhead and Dun Laoghaire.

Stena Line has reached an agreement on a 5 year charter deal with Marine Atlantic in Canada for the charter of Stena Traveller and Stena Trader , both ships will be heavily modified before entering service with Marine Atlantic. They will be replaced by temporary tonnage until 2 newbuilds are delivered next year for the Killingholme - Hook Of Holland service.
The new Stena Hollandica has entered service displacing the former Stena Hollindica which is on its way to a Polish shipyard (belived to be Remontawa) for an extensive refit before replacing either Stena Germanica or Stena Scandinavica , which will in turn replace Stena Baltica on Polish routes.
Below from www.shipspotting.com are Stena traveller , Stena Trader , two Stena Hollindica's passing each other in Holland , Stena Baltica , Stena Germanica and Stena Scandinavica.

Kieran

Was I seeing things, or are they shortening them before delivery?!?

Collision-course

Yes astonishingly both Stena Traveller and Stena Trader are to be shortened while having their passenger capacity increased at the same time , I imagine both ships will look quite different when they emegre from the yard.
