Fleet refit press release for 2019, a cool 5 million Sterling

Harland and Wolff Shipyard Chosen for Ferry Refits

Leading ferry company Stena Line has started work on a £5m refit programme of its local ferry fleet at Belfast's Harland and Wolff shipyard. The 10-week upgrade schedule will see five Stena Line vessels dry docked consecutively to facilitate refurbishment and maintenance works.

Paul Grant, Stena Line Trade Director (Irish Sea North) said: "Regular ship refits are an important element in our ship management operation which helps to maintain our excellent reliability and keeps our Irish Sea fleet to the forefront of the ferry sector. We're pleased that we are continuing to work with Harland and Wolff in Belfast to carry out these important upgrades, helping to secure the local maritime skills base in Northern Ireland."

Paul Grant added: "Whilst Stena Line has already committed a significant investment to introducing three new ships to the Irish Sea starting in early 2020, it's also important that we continue to improve, develop and invest in our existing fleet of vessels, which is exactly what this contract will do."

Jonathan Guest, Harland and Wolff's Chief Executive Officer, said: "Harland and Wolff is delighted to welcome back five of Stena Line's Irish Sea vessels. Our working partnership with Stena Line is very important not only to our company but to the local economy through its associated supply chain."

Stena Line is the largest ferry operator on the Irish Sea, offering the biggest fleet and the widest choice of routes including Belfast to Liverpool and Heysham, Belfast to Cairnryan, Dublin to Holyhead and Rosslare to Fishguard routes, a total of 238 weekly sailing options between Britain and Ireland. Stena Line also offers a direct service from Rosslare to Cherbourg with three return crossings a week.

Do we know which five ferries are being overhauled at Harland and Wolff?

Where is the Stena Europe going and when?

Stena Lagan, Stena Mersey, Stena Superfast X, Stena Superfast VII and Stena Superfast VIII each for two weeks at Harland and Wolff. Stena Europe is not going to Belfast this year which might suggest she will be having a more major overhaul - the life extension, perhaps?

stena europe is going to turkey for a 3 mth refit sometime in March, stena nordica will be on the run to cover

marthyrarth

Europe will be having a major refit then, including interior upgrades to keep her on at Fishguard for years to come then?

Lagan has returned to service, Mersey now in drydock in H&W.

Stena Europe sailings continue cancellation today due to technical issue.

If as rumored Europe goes to Turkey for life extending refit, there will be a number of areas which will probably be worked on including

MES evacuation system
Mechanical and engineering overhaul for engines etc
Possibly scrubbers fitted / prepared for, to future proof for Irish Sea  in advance is sulphur (seca) controls
Bridge wing extensions enclosed
Car deck renewal/ removal of worn metal
Windows- possible replacement of window frames
Hull - Strip back to bare metal and repaint

Nothing confirmed yet, but if they are going to the trouble of spending some serious money it is likely they could refurb some onboard areas also.

Pure speculation / wish list - unlikely to happen but can always dream

Inboard cabins are never on sale, possible refurb for them (creation of Stena suites) would be an idea for families traveling during day and night - similar to Superfast suites on North channel

Cabins - due a refurb to bring up to modern standards but still comfy if not updated.

Barista C View - could do with a make over new large led screen.

Stena + continues to be very popular- possible extension of this area to include more space

Toilets- while recently facelifted, need to be ripped out and rebuilt to modern standards - even put a window in - nobody can see in ! - add natural light

Stena Line branding- if repaint is being done, add the supersize logo as seen on Adventurer.

Also I am sure crew accommodation could be due an overhaul as well.

I think the most visible difference for traveling passengers would be new windows / frames and deck railing as these are the areas where you see corrosion and if done, would improve the age perception very quickly.

As Nordica will be in Ireland until June Europe should be in dock for over two months which will give plenty of time to get work done.

The Food City (or is it a Met now?) is the nastiest space on board and has barely been touched since 2002. So if they are spending money to refit her I'd hope they'd do something to address that.

Met now, forgot about that, never go into it, yes could do with refurb.

Maybe Stena Europe will go to turkey for scrapping.
