You definitely make a lot of sense, I suppose for a 22/34 hour crossing a cruise ferry would be ideal but to sustain the route a large ship is they way to go, to get the route going is the Normandy being used at the moment ? (I don't think the conversion to oil support has gone ahead, but the ship is in Singapore (http://www.equinoxnrg.com/arv-2/), could fill in until Pride of Bilbao is released and refitted for the route.

The Stena Britannica will not be available until the end of the year as far as I know as the Hollandica will be replaced first and the Hollandica is not a fine a vessel as the Britannica, so it could be the Hollandica sailing into Ringaskiddy in early June !!

QuoteCork to Spain Ferry Service Update - Mar 2010
Port is in discussion with potential operators about a direct Cork/Spain service

Cork to Northern Spain Ferry Service Update

From Port of Cork Commercial Manager, Captain Michael McCarthy

"The Port of Cork Company is in detailed discussion with potential operators regarding a passenger/ ro-ro service direct from Cork to Northern Spain and the west coast of France. Although discussions are at an advanced stage, we are not in a position to finalise a commencement date.
We are endeavoring to complete our discussions by mid April.

Since the possibility of a service was reported in the national newspapers a few weeks ago, the Port of Cork has been inundated with interest from both the general public and business interests in Ireland, Spain, Portugal and France.

We appreciate all the emails and telephone contact regarding a potential service and we will ensure you are contacted once a decision has been made".

April update for this project suggests that the Port Of Cork is still hopefull of this service commencing in 2010 and say that negotiations with an operator are well advanced , however I dont realistically see this service being launched this late in the operating year,

May update for this project suggests that negotiations are well advanced with an operator for this service , and goes on to say that they are hopefull that the service will commence in October 2010 When a suitable vessel becomes available , this would point to the Pride of Bilbao as being the vessel being looked at , it is not known if Irish Ferries is the operator though.

The rumour mill is doing overtime with suggestions that the picture below is the ship and operator intending to take up the Cork - Gijon , and Cork St. Nazaire Motorways of the Seas services at the end of the year.
In september , the Norman Bridge (belwo from www.shipspotting.com) will transfer to the LD Line /Grimaldi joint venture GLD Atlantique to inaugrate the St Nazaire - Gijon service

Any news on the proposed Cork Gijon Service?

I see Gijon-St Nazaire is up and running with the Norman Bridge. Fares seem really attractive fares, LD Lines are offering a "landbridge fare" from UK to Spain.

This statment from the Port Of Cork is not encouraging , if the service does not start at the begining of the season it is unlikely to appear this year.

Proposed Ferry Service from Cork to Gijon
Friday 11 February 2011

It is unlikely that this proposed ferry service from the Port of Cork to Port of Gijon will commence in March 2011 as originally hoped.

Dialogue with potential operators and investors is continuing, however in the current climate it is proving more challenging to establish this service. The Port of Cork, along with our colleagues in Port of Gijon are committed to the project and will continue to work in establishing this ferry service.

If anyone is waiting to book their 2011 holidays, you are advised to go ahead and book with another ferry operator. The Port of Cork will give a further update on the proposed service in early June 2011.

Thank you for you continued support and your patience.

Existing Plymouth Service to Santander attracts a lot of Irish users as does Irish Ferries to Roscoff but all heading to Portugal or Spain.  Service from Cork may also prove attractive to customers from Wales and Northern England.  Extending marketing and pushing the PETS scheme would attract more users.  With increase in diesel etc and even before any green factors, makes sense.  The sooner the better.

The rumor mill is working overtime on this topic , it is suggested that DFDS Seaways is very close on an agreement to take up this service (and all the grant aid that goes with it) also rumored that it will be operated by King Seaways (former Brittany Ferries Val De Loire) which is no stranger to Cork or the Bay of Biscay and said to be being replaced on UK - Holland traffic by a more modern secondhand cruise ferry from the Baltic.
