Interislander have signed a letter of intent for two new ferries to replace their current fleet of three, order to be placed with Hyundai Mipo in Korea

Vessels to be replaced include the former Isle of Innisfree - Kaitaki, the former Stena Allegra - Kaiarahi and the purpose built Aratare.

Hyundai are also building the new Isle of Man ferry - Manxman due in 2023.

KiwiRail and Korean shipyard Hyundai Mipo Dockyard have signed a binding contract for the delivery of two new, state-of-the-art ferries, with the first to arrive in 2025 and the second in 2026. More here on the KiwiRail website

Special feature on the excellent NI Ferry Scene site about an E-Flexer concept that was never ordered. Potential ferries for Interlander that never made it.

So looks like Interislander will be going back to the drawing board and replacing with more standard size ferries either new or used, which will open up a wide range of other options.

How much will they have to pay Hyundai to cancel the contract ?

Wonder who will take advantage of the slots available at hyundai for two large ferries to be built next next year with most of the design work done ?

Will we see the EFlexer option back on the table now as a more realistic option to fit in the current ports/terminals ?

This is a major surprise cancellation and given its the on shore developments which were contributing nearly 80% of the cost a more standard size option that can use the existing terminals etc is a much better fit.

I assume they will be stung for the deposit (balance is due on delivery). I assume it's a few million USD, but they obviously did the calculations when they cut their losses!

The cost of not going ahead with the two new ferries for Interislander has been revealed

Not far off the total cost of taking delivery of the two ferries, and what will they have at the end, absolutely nothing, very strange.

All the last years was the biggest most expensive ferry-scandal around Calmac and Ferguson Marine in Scotland - but now it is a big competition with all things around Kiwi-Rails ordered and now canceled ferry-new-buildings - which of these scandals is the biggest... .

All 3 years are general-elections in New Zealand, so the new Government has only in 2024/2025 now time to find anywhere modern big used cheap ferries for to replace the old fleet... - for this they want contact international shipbrokers. Otherwise i guess the Government there will change again in 2026... .

Makes no sense what Interislander are doing, I know there are many millions planned on spending in the ports which is what scuppered the deal.

I think two EFlexers (Interislander spec) will probably be the solution, charter for ten years with option to purchase, no up front cost and Stena RoRo continue the long business relationship they have had in New Zealand.

But I wonder will anyone take on the two build slots left open by the cancellation ?

This should make some of us feel old (well me anyway as I was finishing college when the First new build of modern IF history arrived)

The former Isle of Innisfree first introduced in the mid 90s by Irish Ferries getting a life Extension refit !

Not to believe... - instead of to buy now any newer used bigger (the limited capacities are also a big problem there) ferry they are coming with ideas of life-extension of 30-years old ferries !

Maybe the Kaitaki was a nice ferry in the 90ies - but she has had really dangerous big problems in the last years - what can happen at drifting without power is to be seen just now in Baltimore - and the New zealand street is a much more dangerous water with high waves and strong winds. She need to replace as the both other old ferries too - and to spend in 2025 many millions for any lifetime extension is in my opinion complete nonsense. Also f.ex. Stena will never again doing such an operation as with the Stena Europe life-extension.

Typically for a state-owned-company like Kiwi-rail - they spend tons of money without end for one wrong solution after the next wrong solution !
