What is the likely impact of Britain's exit from the EU on the ferry business. Obviously the different types of Brexit will determine different outcomes. What would total exit from the single market mean? Would leaving the customs union mean the return of duty-free? Clearly this will impact freight business as well as the car and passenger business but how?

Would they consider leaving the customs union? That would lead to the possibility of trade tariffs being imposed highly unlikely that UK manufacturers would be in favour of this. But then again nobody expected them to vote to leave in the first place,(including their new PM). If it were the case that they did leave the customs union a huge increase direct freight services from Ireland to the rest of the EU would be required to avoid those tariffs. Its a wait and see game for the moment though.

Nobody knows is the simple answer.  Until the UK and the EU decide what their trading relationship is going to be, and what is going to happen re the border with NI, that will remain the case.  Of course, some businesses will be more cautious but others may take risks and expand as well I suppose.
