The Merrion Lounge / Mercy Ships to order a new ves...
Last post by giftgrub - April 22, 2024, 08:20:54 PM
At first maybe not ferry related, however Stena RoRo have been the technical partner for Mercy Ships for a long time and the Global Mercy is based on the Stena Seabird design which gave us the Stena Britannica / Hollandica design.

https://stenaroro.com/cases/global-mercy/

So if Mercy Ships are going to order a new hospital ship, will they decide to go for an Elexer based hospital ship, which could be the ultimate in Stenability.

Quote from: Cladyman on April 14, 2024, 06:10:42 PMHas it always been that you get seriously charged for each passenger.  We put 2 adults and 4 kids coming out at @€650+ crazy could be in France for not much more.

Hello Cladyman,
thanks for your post, i have extra waited a few days if any other person from Ireland or UK here will answer you something... . Normally any travel-/traffic-forums should be mainly for such a kind of "normal" travelers as you.

I have started a special topic about the generally much too high ferry-ticket-prices to/from Ireland here under "Discussion Board". You are very welcome to discuss further there - i will also today answer to you there especially.

Because here in this topic it is especially about fleet-details, fleet-changes etc. only from the ferry-company Irish Ferries.

Yes, it is also in the normal Passenger-timetables so.
Oscar Wilde overtake this year the former EPSILON timetable.
So they have further upgraded the Holyhead-route and the Cherbourg-route with this big and much more comfortable ferry from Scandinavia.

But the big question is still what happens on the Pembroke-route ?
Will they continue in summer-season also with very poor and small Norbay-freighter
or will they come "in last minute" suddenly "around the corner" with any other bigger more comfortable used ferry ?

More development in Rosslare, this is in relation to the offshore wind side of things.

Hi all,

My general approach to moderation has been to let things flow, if a thread goes slightly off topic, it's not that big a deal.

If you do feel a post is going down an off topic rabbit hole, or a topic isn't really relevant, just report it and include a comment with why you're unhappy with it, and I will address it.

Quote from: giftgrub on April 20, 2024, 03:27:31 PMNo. 3,4,5&6 Life Boats corroded keel structure & hanging brackets (UTM Report ALF-23435 December 2023) to be repaired. Flag Exemption letter RCS 13826-12-007-2024 dated 2024.01.09 allows for reduction in LSA numbers to 632 along with mitigating arrangements to be made.

Also as pointed out by forum member boathansm previously the passenger certificate has expired on the 15th April so lucky that everything went to plan in the end.

Some excellent investigation work there!

Your not comparing like with like though. Molslinjen are geared towards passengers, most Irish Sea routes have a far bigger freight requirement (and people aren't travelling a massive distance in Denmark from the ports).  Cairnryan is 8 hours drive/train from London, or an hour and a half on a plane – what are people going to choose?
And apart from the Swift, fast ferries have disappeared from the Irish Sea.

The Irish Sea has changed massively since airline deregulation in Europe (and in the last few years, Brexit has changed operations out of Rosslare and Cork).

Dublin – London is one of the busiest air routes in the world, time is massive factor here for most passangers.

You are bullshitting again.

These are freight carriers more than tourist vessels, and they carry as many trucks as vehicles.

Tourism to Newfoundland is highly seasonal, with more than half of all tourists arriving in just two months.  July is x10 bigger than May.  Because of the weather, 80% of shoulder season tourists arrive by air, which is just 30 tourists a day sailing to Newfoundland (divided over multiple sailings).

These ferries are predominantly freight carriers with frequency matching demand and driver sleep requirements.  And please give it a rest on capmervans -Shoulder season campsite is just 6% of all stays, and only 600 stays across all sites in May for example.

FYI Marine Atlantic were paying about $10m a year for leasing the Atlantic Vision.  The eflexer is on a five year lease.

Sadly - since decades - all ferry-routes to / from Ireland / Northern Ireland are the most expensive ferries worldwide. For cars, motor-homes and passengers - but also for trucks and freight.

The biggest majority of the more than 7 Mio. people living on this big Island is forced to use all the 1000s of cheapest flights instead - because all ferry-routes are much too expensive.
Only alone with Europes biggest Airline i get for any day in middle of may f.ex. flights to 48 airports in Europe flights for 14-20 Euro only - and 50 more airports for up to 30,- or 40,- . But with car only from one ferry-port to any other ferry-port costs some hundred Euro !

With the result that for the biggest majority of most people generally ferries are NO TRAVEL-OPTION - and because of the extremly high freight-rates all products in Ireland costs much more than f.ex. in Sweden, Spain or Germany. The only winners around all ferries aound UK and Ireland are only the few shareholders, owners and managers of the ferry-companies which makes super-gigantic XXXL profits - and support massive with their super high-price- strategies all the rental-car-companies in Ireland (they have the most expensive prices in Europe too) and the airlines - which are very happy to get always more and more customers every year.

To see it clear for everybody how crazy galactic super-expensive ferries to/from Irland are - here a comparison-example with the high tax (25%!) "rich" country Denmark: The domestic ferry-route Irish North-Channel against the biggest domestic ferry-route in Denmark (both routes gets 0 subsidizes !) on / for any normal week-day f.ex. 22.may:

Cairnryan-Larne/Belfast ---------------- Aarhus-Odden (Sjaellands Odde)
P&O / Stena Line ----------------------- Molslinjen
Flagg Bahamas / UK --------------------- Flagg+Crew from Denmark
32 / 40 seamiles ----------------------- 37,5 seamiles
2:00 - 2:22 hours travel-time ---------- 80 min travel-time
maybe long waiting for off-driving------ very fast on / off driving in 2, 3, 4 min only
check-in close 45 min before dep. ------ ticket-buy & check-in up to 5 min before dep.
6 / 6 dep./24 hours (partly in night)    12 day-departures in each directions, often hourly
2 / 2 "normal" RoPax-ferries ----------- 3 big fast Catamarans
built in 2000, 2001, 2001, 2002 -------- built in 2013, 2017, 2019
counted Speed 19 / 21,5 knots ---------- counted Speed circa 37 knots
Max. Pax-Capacity 410, 410, 1200, 1300-- Max. Pax-Capacity 3 x 1000(+ 3 x more than 400 cars)
??? ------------------------------------ Comfortable seats with a table are free included
??? ------------------------------------ Bar, Self-Service-Restaurant and a Cafe are onboard
??? ------------------------------------ Up to 3 own Kombardoexpressen ferry-buses onboard
1,9 Mio. N-Ireland - 5,5 Mio. Scotland-- 2,4 Mio.Sjaeland(with Cop.) - 2,3 Mio. Jütland(Aar.)

Car+4 Pax one-way daytime € 259 / 266 -- Car+4 Pax one-way daytime 33,33 Euro (DKK 249)
SO WHY IS THE IRISH NORTH CHANNEL ca. 8-times SO EXPENSIVE as from Odden to Aarhus ?

So all the ferries to/from Ireland are in 1st super top-position of all rip-offs in Europe !
They could make well profit as Molslinjen is doing - but they want 8-times so much profit !

And if we now look further in details - f.ex. that Molslinjen operates against parallel a modern empty fast motorway (always free drive - 130km/h), intercity-trains and a lot of cheap Flixbuses, 25% very high tax in Denmark, prices are generally 30% higher than in the middle of EU-countries, much faster speed of the ferries, much faster on/off and waitingtime in ports, that Molslinjen has nearly no freight and if we look to the much bigger XXXL potential of travel-population in UK/Ireland - maybe also from Dublin to Scotland or from Northern Ireland to the Midlands or Newcastle-region or to London - all this conditions are much bigger and better than in Denmark.

So normally the ferries in North Channel would to be expected to be CHEAPER than in Denmark - because they have better and bigger conditions for to offer cheapest prices.

But sadly in UK / Ireland the ferry-companies are not interested to offer cheap attractive and fast travelling for all masses of normal people from A to B - but only in rip off so much money as possible from the few "must travel what ever it costs" people !

Think how much more often all the people would travel there between Ireland and UK - if a full car (up to 9 people) costs only 33,-€ and own ferry-express-coaches f.ex. from Belfast or Dublin to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Manchester and Newcastle costs only 13,-€ as in Denmark.

In many cases also the people would switch from flights to car+ferry then - much more comfortable travelling from door to door with all people, baggage, pets etc. in own car then with long expensive shuttle/transfer to/from any airports and with smallest baggage only.

If we take f.ex. this 8,25 Euro per person with 4 (or more - 1 car = 1 fixed price) adults in 1 car - for this small money the people can not travel with flights ! And it is so cheap that a lot of people would travel weekly or monthly, visiting friends, family, relatives, football-games, shopping-days, special cultural events etc. - and not only travel as today never or only 1, 2 or 3-times a year at Christmas, Easter and summer-holidays - because of the ticket-prices are today much much too expensive for to travel more often.

So how many many years longer in future the people in UK and Ireland want to pay 8-times so high ticket-prices - than what would be needed for to operate with well profit attractive fast comfortable ferries incl. own ferry-bus-network ?

If Germany, France, Italy or Spain would be an Island - which such super high ferry-ticket-prices - than there would be biggest protests, demonstrations, burning truck-wheels, road-blocking trucks etc. . But in UK and Ireland - all the people accept galactic super-expensive ticket-prices and that a few people (owners, shareholders etc.) makes gigantic XXL profits ?

An english-speaking family is testing Molslinjen with car:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBF_2fxgoQs

And here someone (in english) as foot-passenger inside the double-deck own ferry-express-coaches explain very well how this leading integrated travel-system "buses & ferry" works:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTdXe5jDojk

And just a view back into last century:
Also Molslinjen had in the past slowly inefficiency "normal" ferries with higher ticket prices, less departures, smaller frequency, much less passengers and without own ferry-buses:

https://f.nordiskemedier.dk/2zzz750pls44pzub.jpg

But then they have changed to the actually in this century contemporary "door-to-door" travel-system with very CHEAP easy fast efficiency attractive mass-transport-system on sea.
