The News Board / Re: Stena Line fleet movements
November 01, 2020, 09:03:08 AM
Stena Vinga stayed at home in Rosslare last night. Epsilon left late and is currently approaching Lands End from the north.
Pont Aven seems to have made it on time from Cork to Roscoff, I guess that was her last trip of the year from Ireland. One wonders what the landscape will look like when she returns next spring.

Stena Vinga hasn't moved out of Cherbourg for the last few days. This evening's sailing from Rosslare is cancelled due to the bad weather. It looks like she has trouble managing heavy seas on the passage around Lands End.

The Merrion Lounge / Sinking of the Estonia
October 05, 2020, 09:39:06 AM
The  Estonia went down on a stormy night in the Baltic 26 years ago. It was said at the time that the storm ripped the bow doors off,  a pretty alarming thought. However new research suggests that there is another explanation. See the article below

Return to lockdown is a pretty grim scenario. However there are hints in the UK press that the vaccine [Triumph, the one being developed in Oxford] will be available by the end of the year. Might not be so bad.

The News Board / Re: Duty Free IS Back On Irish Sea

The amount one can bring in to the UK seems to have been determined by a beer and spirit man /woman.

In my reckoning 3 cases of beer means 72 bottles,  4 litres of spirits is 5 bottles but 2 cases of wine is only 12 bottles, 12 bottles  won't last the winter.

Why this discrimination against lovers of the fruit of vine?

What are the options? Should the  Government set up a ferry company? Subsidise IF,  Stena or P and O to run a service?

Regarding shipping I suppose Brittany Ferries has some ships lying idle currently, would any of those be suitable for overnight  freight or Ro/Pax service?

One other question, which ports? Dublin seems pretty packed so Rosslare or Cork must be in the frame.....to Cherbourg, Dunkerque?

Interesting times.

WB Yeats cancelled yesterday due to 'technical difficulties'. Anyone know what the problem is?

The News Board / Dublin Paris high speed link.

Interesting article in Dublin Live puts forward an idea for a Dublin to Paris high speed rail link connected via ferry link from Cork to Brest. I wonder how long the trip might take.

Trying to get through to Irish Ferries to apply a refund from March to a new booking. Can't get through on the phone and they don't answer my emails. Any advice?

Brittany ferries restarting Cork-Roscoff on 3rd July. [The prices look to be near normal for high season].

That may not necessarily be the case. A report on the RTE website today [11th June] titled 'ICG passenger numbers down 60% due to virus' reviews the trading situation for the past 5 months and concludes

"The group is in a strong financial position to weather this Covid-19 storm," the company concluded.

WB Yeats may be back on the Cherbourg run but the prices remain very high through to early July, they come in around 1300 euro return for 2 with a car without cabins. They reduce as the month goes on. That suggests to me that they are set at a price to discourage car travel for the next few weeks.

Thinking of booking a trip to France on WBY seeing as we might be let in later in June/ July. However the fares on WBY are horrendous. Going out end of June and back mid July is 675 euro for 2 people without a cabin each way. I cannot remember paying fares like that. Anybody know what's going on?
