Balearia is in the process of ordering two new LNG powered ferries , no images yet sadly , the new ships are to be built in Spanish yards , I am hearing that there is an expected building boom of new tonnage for the ferry industry after years of stagnation , some interesting times ahead if true. http://www.marinelog.com/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&id=9693:lanaval-poised-to-ink-order-to-build-two-lng-fueled-ferries&Itemid=226

EU Funding Endorses Port of Cork Plans for Development
EU Funding Endorses Port of Cork Plans for Development
Monday 06 January 2014
PRESS RELEASE
EU Funding Endorses Port of Cork Plans for Development
Following a successful funding procedure, the Port of Cork has been awarded funding by the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). The Port of Cork, described as a future Core Network port by TEN-T, plays a key strategic role in the movement of goods to and from the UK and Continental Europe. This funding will assist in ensuring the Port of Cork meets future connectivity needs and will support the development of the wider regional and national economy which is of key importance to Cork.
It is anticipated that in the first quarter of 2014 and following public consultation, the Port of Cork will lodge a planning application to An Bord Pleanala for the future development of port facilities in Ringaskiddy.
The proposed developments are the first phase of the Port of Cork's Strategic Development Plan Review (2010), the core principles of which were endorsed in the National Ports Policy launched in 2013. This Policy also identified the continued commercial development of the Port of Cork Company as a key strategic objective.
Speaking about the proposed developments and the recently secured funding, Mr Denis Healy, Manager Engineering Services, Port of Cork said: "This TEN-T funding endorses the Port of Cork's plans for future development and securing connectivity for the region. The general objective of the TEN-T is to modernise transport infrastructure and this objective sits in line with the Port of Cork's need to improve and ensure future port facilities."
He continued: "The funding will go towards the achievement of the required statutory consents and the preparation of designs for developments, primarily at Ringaskiddy, but also at Marino Point and Tivoli. It also opens up the opportunity for further EU supports for the implementation phase of the project under the new Connecting Europe Facility (CEF)."
The Trans-European Transport Network Executive Agency (TEN-T EA), established by the European Commission, is responsible for managing the technical and financial implementation of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) programme, one of the most important means of infrastructure funding.
Its mission is to support the European Commission and TEN-T project managers and promoters, by ensuring the technical and financial management of the projects and the successful implementation of the TEN-T Programme.

The Merrion Lounge / Arson aboard King Seaways
December 29, 2013, 05:54:55 PM
Scary incident aboard King Seaways (former Brittany Ferries Val De Loire) , http://metro.co.uk/2013/12/29/passenger-detained-after-fire-breaks-out-on-newcastle-ferry-cabin-bound-for-amsterdam-4244279/

As I have said before , setting fire to a ship at sea should be counted as attempted murder , if it were me I would be charging this person with 1073 counts of attempted murder.
Full marks to the DFDS crew who dealt with the situation , hopefully those injured will make a speedy recovery.

The Merrion Lounge / Sea-Fi
April 05, 2013, 06:08:38 AM
The Port of Cork has become the first wi-fi enabled port in Ireland , see here for more http://www.corkharbour.ie/pages/newsDisplay.php?id=242

Cork Harbour First Port to Receive Free Wi-Fi Network

The new wi-fi network will enhance data transfer for many purposes including research, education, navigation and marine defence.

Cork Harbour is the first port in Ireland to have a fully operational free wi-fi network.

SeaFi is a wireless network covering the navigational areas of Cork Harbour, from just off Roches Point to areas such as Fairway and East Channel. The system has recently been installed by IMERC-based company Sea-Tech in partnership with Nova Networks and with the support of the Irish Naval Service. Once properly rigged by a Sea-Tech operative, vessels of any size, in range of a base station, can use SeaFi.

Anyone requiring transfer of data at sea will appreciate the new system, which is operating at average speeds far superior to satellite communication. It is also significantly cheaper to operate than satellite. For instance, many research vessels have to physically transfer data to shore on hardware devices. Wireless transfer will transform how these vessels operate.

SeaFi has already been successfully used by the Port of Cork tugboat, 'Denis Murphy'. According to Arnaud Disant of Sea-Tech, 'what SeaFi will do for Denis Murphy is very simple. Everywhere the multicat will be on lower harbour, it will be able to send and receive emails, images, access our cameras all around cork harbour. Denis Murphy could easily be equipped with its own cameras so Cork habour operation could survey and assess situations in real time.'

The February edition of the Nautilus International Telegraph said that all ports should endeavor to provide free wi-fi coverage. In reality very few ports have such capability, but Cork now has thanks to SeaFi. This is not a marina style wi-fi network, but a highly advanced system capable of transferring data throughout the harbour area.

The new wi-fi network will enhance data transfer for many purposes including research, education, navigation and marine defence.

The Merrion Lounge / The Ships Of Rosslare Harbour
January 21, 2009, 07:35:37 PM
The Ships Of Rosslare Harbour - A Photographic History , is a new book from Nonsuch Publishing (Dublin) which I would recommend to anyone with an interest in Irish ferry operations , the book has many excellent photo's of all the ferries that have operated from Rosslare since it was built in the late 1800's right up to the present day and many of the photo's are colour.
The book also contains photo's of many ships which were just visiting the port (you'd be surprised at the ships that have been in there over the years) however , strangely the book does not go into any great detail about the port itself beyond its construction and upgrading over the years (for example I could not find any reference to the fact that the port is owned and operated by CIE).
Still a good book all round and highly recomended , it is priced around 20 Euro.

The Merrion Lounge / The Cork Connection
June 26, 2011, 10:49:34 PM
I recently purchased the Ferry & Cruise 2011 Annual , inside is an 8 page feature on car ferry operations from Cork , it has excellent photo's of Innisfallen , Fennia , Ionan Sun , Celtic Pride , Supperferry and Julia , it gives the history of Cork - UK passenger ships from the Victorian era right up to the present day.
I highly reccomend this book to anyone with an interest in Cork ferries.
There is also a section featuring a large selection of Irish sea ferries with all operators included in the gallery , so also a must have for Irish ferry entheuiasts.

Port of Cork wins two World Cruise Awards
Monday 11 April 2011

The Port of Cork has won 1st place for 'Best Destination Experience (Organised)' in the world and 2nd place for 'Best Port Welcome' after attending the largest annual cruise conference 'Cruise Shipping Miami' where the 15th Annual "Dream World Cruise Destinations" 2010 Awards were announced. This achievement highlights the outstanding team effort and commitment by the Port of Cork to deliver an excellent service to the visiting cruise lines and their passengers when in Cork. Ireland Inc received a Commendation as a "Destination where the Quality and Professionalism of Tour Guides is considered outstanding".

Since the early 1990's the Port of Cork has been welcoming cruise liners to Cork Harbour and today an average of 54 cruise liners call each year bringing over 100,000 passengers and crew to the region. The Port of Cork has invested heavily in this business and has ambitious plans to grow the business to 75 calls over the next five years. Receiving these world awards shows the enormous effort by the Port of Cork to ensure new and existing cruise companies continue to call to Cork. The Port of Cork can provide excellent deep water facilities for liners in Cobh and Ringaskiddy, making it an attractive port of call for the larger liners as well as smaller liners.

The winners of 'Dream World Cruise Destinations' Annual Awards are based on surveys that are collected and analyzed from Cruise Line Executives from all of the major cruise companies. The awards, launched in 1993, announce the ports and destinations that have provided outstanding services to ships, passengers and crew. The geographical mix of large and small ports receiving awards from Dubai, Far East, the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Baltic and Americas, reflected the global nature of the business.

Speaking about the awards, Captain Michael McCarthy Commercial Manager at the Port of Cork said: "The Port of Cork is very grateful to receive these world awards. It is such an achievement not only for the Port but Cork as a region. We are fortunate to have excellent relationships with tourism providers, tour operators, Irish Rail and local tourism groups to be able to win these awards. Considerable effort goes into welcoming these liners when in Cork and we would like to share these awards with everyone who works with us on making this business work for the region. The awards will be used as a benchmark to drive growth in the cruise business, review product delivery and continue to review the berthing of small, medium and mega vessels."

He continued: "We are committed to growing the cruise liner business in Cork and winning these awards gives us the confidence to make this happen. The cruise liner business is worth an average of €8 million per annum directly to the Cork region and many businesses in the region can benefit from these vessels. The Port of Cork aims to continually work with City, County and Local Town Councils, tour operators, tourism service providers and many other local bodies to succeed in our ambitious plans for growth."

"The poignancy of the arrival of our first cruise vessel for 2011, the MV Queen Victoria, is its berthing on the 99th anniversary of the departing of the Titanic from Cobh on the 11th April 1912. Cobh's association with the Titanic will be commemorated during 2012 and already travels writers and historic groups are visiting Cobh to make its association."

In 2011, 54 cruise ships are scheduled to call to the Port of Cork facilities including the maiden call of the brand new MV Queen Elizabeth and the largest liner to call to an Irish port, MV Independence of the Seas. Over 100,000 passengers and crew will visit the Cork region during the liner season.
