A new report in today's Irish Times shows that freight/truck movements on the Dublin Holyhead route have fallen by 30% in the first nine months of this year with Rosslare experiencing a similar drop in trade. However direct routes to the continent have grown by 370% in the same time period, there is also a big increase in traffic on NI routes.

The News Board / Calais Seaways
« on: August 09, 2021, 03:56:41 pm »
Rumours that Calais Seaways, having been replaced by the new Côte D’Opale, is bound for Irish Ferries as the 2nd ship on the Dover Calais route. These rumours have been on other forums and sites for a few months with nothing to back it up. It is now on her wiki page
"Speculation and rumours have surfaced that she might be sold to Irish Ferries and complement the Isle of Inishmore on their Dover-Calais service, however no official statement has been released from either DFDS, Irish Ferries or anyone else, so her future for now is uncertain".
I don't know but good 2nd hand tonnage is a bit scarce so maybe a short term charter?

The News Board / Moby ropax for sale
« on: April 01, 2021, 02:32:28 pm »
Reports that Moby are to sell off 5 vessels 3 ropax and 2 ro/ro as part of a survival plan. The ropax are Moby Wonder, Aki and Tommy.
Now I recall that a couple of years ago DFDS entered into an agreement to purchase Wonder and Aki and that in return Moby were to buy King Seaways and Princess Seaways, the press release regarding this transaction is still on the DFDS website. However Moby felt that they were unable to meet the delivery terms of the contract so the sale was cancelled.
Could any of these vessels be potential targets for the new Irish Ferries Dover service?

The News Board / Brexit
« on: January 12, 2021, 04:06:32 pm »
Drivers of UK or NI registered vehicles arriving into Europe from Ireland are having to provide proof of a negative PCR covid test in the 72 hours prior to arrival or have to provide proof that they are normally resident in the Republic of Ireland.
Meanwhile customs officers busy confiscating sandwiches and other foodstuffs from drivers arriving from the UK into Europe which action seems to be really p*ssing off the right wing pro brexit media who promoted it.

The News Board / Stena Line Cancel Sailings
« on: January 08, 2021, 11:24:21 am »
Stena have announced the cancellation of a number of sailings on the Irish Sea this weekend due to the large downturn in business being suffered as a result of brexit. A total of 12 sailings have been cancelled this weekend including the 0800 from Rosslare to Fishguard on Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday (and obviously the return legs). The 0215 from Dublin to Holyhead on Sunday and Monday have also been cancelled.

The News Board / M.V Leinster
« on: July 09, 2020, 11:22:54 am »
The 1981 built M.V Madeleine' (formerly B&I's Leinster) career is coming to an end the Canadian transport department have acquired an interim vessel the MS Villa De Teror which was originally ordered by Viking Line but it's construction was beset by problems. (a read of her wiki page is quite interesting).
The Leinster was built in Verlome Dockyard in Cork a sister ship of the Connacht (now the Dubrovnik) she served Dublin to Liverpool then Dublin to Holyhead also spent some time on Rosslare -Pembroke after the Irish Ferries takeover she was renamed Isle of Inishmore in 1993 and later Isle of Inishturk. She was laid up after the arrival of the new Isle of Inishmore and sold to the Coop?rative de Transport Maritime et A?rien  in 1997 where she has being the main vessel on her route ever since.
A true testament to the former Dockyard who built both vessels that they are still in service 40 years later.

The News Board / P&O
« on: April 17, 2020, 12:01:30 pm »
A couple of weeks ago there were reports that the company was struggling to "keep afloat" and that they had sought a bailout of £150 million of taxpayers cash from the UK government an idea they are probably not too keen on. P&O's Dubai owners were reported to be seeking an additional £250 million in cost cuts involving staff wages and pension entitlements. It doesn't look good for the future of this company and I wouldn't be surprised if an examiner was appointed to the company very shortly.
